Implementation key to plastic ban success

The blanket ban on plastics in Delhi came into effect last Friday and the effect can be felt. The shopkeepers, kirana store-wallahs and thelawallahs don't hand out stuff in plastic bags.

However, to proclaim the ban a success already, might be premature, given that most bans tend to lose steam over time.

Chennai is an example. Even though there is a ban on plastic bags of less than 40-micron thickness and awareness programmes continue throughout Chennai, the sale of plastic carry bags is visible in almost all commercial hubs of the city.

Even as the Public Health Department has raided more than three dozen shops in the past three months and seized more than 2,000 tonnes of non-degradable plastic items, the ecosystem is choking, say officials with the Tamil Nadu Environment Department.

However, city corporation denied that the department has been silent over the issue. According to officials,  periodic drives in Parrys and Flower bazaar were conducted and tonnes of plastic were confiscated over last six months. These plastic items are shredded and used for relaying roads.

Moreover, the officials agree that the use of plastic bags has dwindled and said that such drives will continue as per the Union Environment Ministry’s notification under Environment Protection Act, 1980.
